Smokefree Rockquest - Canterbury Regional Heats 2024
This year, five rock bands, one duo group and two solos represented SMC at the Smokefree Rockquest Canterbury Regionals - Fever 55, The Paper Dolls, The Lawn Flamingos, Boy Band and The Spoons all performed an original song in front of an audience at the Aurora Centre, Burnside College. Year 10 band, The Spoons, was selected for the top 16 bands (from over 80!) to perform again at the Regional finals on June 8, 6:30 PM at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre (tickets available soon through Eventfinda). Well done to all who took part, and a big thanks to all the behind-the-scenes work that our music staff and band tutors put in to support our incredible rockers!

Oamaru Performing Arts, Society Inc 85th Festival.
Over the weekend (18-19 May), some hardy SMC Speech and Drama pioneers braved the bitter weather and travelled South to compete in the Oamaru Performing Arts Competition. It was lovely to have our talented team perform in the Oamaru Opera House and to return with medals, ribbons and a trophy.
All three SMC Speech and Drama students were awarded a medal on day one; Rose Griffiths got a silver medal for coming second place in her character recital as Lucy from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Tessa de Wit received a second place medal for her character recital as Alyssa from The End of the F***ing World and Emily Davis brought home the gold for her recitation of her test poem, Five Tulips by Moira Andrews. A test poem is a poem selected by the adjudicator and given to all competitors in an age group that they all learn and perform. The poem is usually one that has challenging aspects for a competitor to work through. Tessa and Rose were awarded Very Highly Commended and Highly Commended ribbons for their other classes. They faced fierce competition against performers from all over the country and truly showed their SMC spirit each time they took the floor.
On Sunday, the only SMC student who still had classes to compete in was Emily, who continued her dream run by winning every single class she was entered in. Emily’s pieces ranged from modern classics of New Zealand literature (Jeannie Once by Renee, Huia by Bill Manhire) to an American cultural icon who wears pink on Wednesdays (Gretchen from Mean Girls)
The competitors were:
