Winter sport is well underway now although with a few interruptions due to some dreary weather.
Badminton
Badminton at SMC in 2024 has hit the floor running. It is super exciting to have so many girls actively participating and enjoying the sport of badminton.
With the trials at the end of term one, our badminton season has started with great enthusiasm. We are proud to have 12 teams entered in the weekly competition, showcasing our girls' talent and dedication. This enthusiasm is also evident at Tuesday's training, with our girls working hard to improve their skills.
We have two teams registered for the South Island Secondary School Competition to compete in Christchurch on the 22nd and 23rd of June. This competition will allow our girls to test their skills against some of the best players from other schools in the region.

Cross Country
We had a small group of dedicated runners from Years 7-10 and their parents who travelled to Timaru to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools' Cross Country Festival.
Florence Cottier-McCormick was 3rd in the year 9 Girls race, and Elsie Seeto was 3rd in the Under 16 race.
Here's a report from one of our Year 7 runners - Alexis Robertson.
SMC was lucky enough to go down to Timaru for the South Island Cross Country event. We were running on a tough course filled with plenty of hills. There were 25 Year 7 and 25 Year 8 students, and we all raced together. For me, this was a really good experience, and I can’t wait to go back in the future and go again.

Gymnastics
Lilly Eastmure recently trialled as a junior international rhythmic gymnast and was selected to represent New Zealand at Singapore Opens in May. In addition, Lilly recently competed in Canada, where her group received first place at the International Koop Cup in Toronto and then received second place at Eastern Regionals in Montreal. At the same event, Lilly also placed third overall in the individual category.
Congratulations on your achievements, Lilly.
Cherry Zhu recently competed in the 2024 Australian Gymnastics Championship on the Gold Coast. Cherry and her teammates won the Junior International Team bronze medal.
In the Junior International Group, Cherry (with four other girls) took 1st place, collecting three gold medals, including group hoop, group clubs, and overall. In the Junior International hoop final, Cherry took 4th place overall—a great success on the International stage.
Table Tennis
Congratulations to Tracey Hsia, who has been named as the non-travelling reserve for the U15 team to attend the Oceania Junior and Senior Championships. It is a great accomplishment to be named, and it is so well done.

Congratulations to Aliyah, who has been selected into the New Zealand 13's Tennis Team to play in the Australian Teams Event in the Gold Coast in June:
