Now 19, Emma is studying medicine at the University of Otago while representing New Zealand on the international volleyball stage, which leaves little time for anything but sleep.
“Balancing medical school with volleyball can be challenging, especially when tests or assignments are coming up,” she admits.
Last year, Emma represented New Zealand in both U19 beach and U20 indoor volleyball. In 2025, she stepped up to the senior women’s team, the Volley Ferns, competing in Vietnam at the AVC Nations Cup.
“Stepping on court in the black jersey is an indescribable feeling,” she says. “It’s surreal to think back to Year 10 when my school coach first mentioned it. I thought it was unrealistic, but that conversation lit a spark in me.”
Juggling intense training, including morning gym sessions, evening club practices, and bi-monthly national camps, alongside a full-time medical degree takes discipline. But for Emma, the motivation is clear: “I want to make the most of the opportunities I’ve been given and make those who’ve supported me proud.”
