Representing New Zealand on the international stage was a dream come true St Margaret’s College Old Girl Sophie Cocks (Year 9 2008), who proudly wore the black jersey as part of the Black Sticks Hockey Team. The experience brought with it lifelong friendships, personal growth, and the chance to play the sport she loves at the highest level.

Transitioning from school and club hockey to life as a full-time international athlete was a challenge she embraced wholeheartedly. With intense competition, constant performance reviews, and elite coaching, the environment was demanding but rewarding. “It was the kind of challenge I’d always strived for while at school,” Sophie reflects.

A standout moment? The call to say she’d made the Olympic team. “It’s one of those feelings that’s hard to put into words—overwhelming, emotional, and completely unforgettable.” Walking into the Rio stadium wearing the fern remains one of her most cherished memories.

Her advice to current students dreaming of hockey success? “Talent will only take you so far. It’s passion and hard work that will get you through. Love what you do, and you’ll go far.”

In the latest issue of Evergreen, you can read about two more of our Old Girls sharing their unforgettable journeys from the hockey fields of St Margaret’s to the Olympic stadiums of the world. From the thrill of international competition to the reality of life as a full-time athlete, Pippa Hayward and Mezzy Surridge tell us about the challenges, triumphs, and the moment they found out they’d made the Black Sticks squad.

But that’s just the beginning. This edition is packed with inspiring stories from alumnae across generations, including Old Girls who are making their mark in the world of broadcast sport, fashion, and environmental conservation, as well as a celebration of the power of a St Margaret’s education to shape lives.
