St Margaret’s College Old Girl Mezzy Surridge has made a remarkable leap onto the international hockey stage, earning her place in the Women’s Black Sticks squad. The 20-year-old forward, known for her goal-scoring ability and fierce competitiveness, recently spoke with Lesley Murdoch on Newstalk ZB about her journey to national honours.

Mezzy is currently in Santiago, Chile, representing New Zealand in the Nations Cup. It’s a significant milestone in a career that has seen her progress through the Canterbury age-group teams, the Junior Black Sticks, and now the full national squad.

“I love putting the ball in the back of the net,” Mezzy said, reflecting on what drives her game. A natural goal-scorer, she emphasised the importance of a strong first touch and constantly refining her ability to make an impact.

Her hockey journey began at St Albans Catholic School, where she was associated with the Marist Hockey Club - a connection she has maintained throughout her career. “I played with them all the way through and still play for them today,” she noted.

While at St Margaret’s Mezzy played in the 1st XI for four years, further developing her skills and competitive mindset. She also had the unique experience of playing alongside her older sister, Pieta, in their final two Canterbury Premier League (CPL) hockey seasons.

A self-proclaimed competitor, Mezzy credits her sisters - she is the third of four girls - for shaping her relentless drive to improve. She also acknowledges the coaches who have influenced her along the way, particularly Sunjay Ganda, who helped her develop mental resilience during her years at St Margaret's. “I worked closely with him over four years,” she said, highlighting how his guidance enhanced her work rate and skillset.

Looking ahead to the match against Chile, Mezzy is excited about the challenge, anticipating a passionate home crowd. She describes the Black Sticks squad as full of energy and determination, with their sights set on reaching the final.

“The step up has been a really cool opportunity,” she said. “I’ve learned so much about myself and from other players. Now, I just need to do my job.”

With her dedication and drive, Mezzy is undoubtedly a rising star in New Zealand hockey, ready to make her mark on the international stage.
