From SMC to Seawolf: Evie Leeson’s journey to Alaska

One of our newest St Margaret’s College alumnae, Evie Leeson, is about to move to Alaska, to study sports science at the University of Alaska Anchorage, on a full basketball scholarship.

Eibhín Leeson’s story, better known as Evie (Year 13 2024), spans continents, beginning in Dublin, Ireland, where she was born, and continuing in New Zealand, where she moved at just one year old.

Joining St Margaret’s College in Year 8, Evie was drawn to the school’s positive, supportive environment and proud sporting tradition. She thrived in sports, representing Canterbury in basketball and netball, competing with the NZ Junior Tall Ferns, and achieving podium finishes at the prestigious Maadi Levin Cup in rowing.

Evie is set to embark on her next adventure, moving to Alaska this month. At the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), she will study sports science with a focus on dietetics and nutrition. This programme perfectly aligns with her passion for understanding how nutrition influences athletic performance and well-being.

Evie's full basketball scholarship to play for the UAA Seawolves in the Western Conference makes this journey even more exciting. Competing against teams from California, Washington, San Diego, Canada, Montana, and even Hawaii in non-conference games, she is ready to take on a new level of competition.

“This new chapter combines my love for food and sports with adventure, and I’m thrilled to continue playing the sport I love while pursuing my studies.”

As she prepares to represent the Seawolves and further her academic and athletic ambitions, Evie is a shining example of the St Margaret’s ethos, proving that with determination and support, the possibilities are endless.
