Old Girl Elizabeth Pitcorn was involved in every possible drama production while at St Margaret’s College (1998-2002), both standalone St Margaret’s productions and when the school combined with Christ’s College. Some years, she appeared on stage; for others, she took on tech roles, working with lighting and sound. Liz was also a member of the senior choir and the chamber choir and enjoyed the bigger events, such as the music festivals at the Town Hall or singing in the Cathedral.
In her final year at St Margaret’s and in her words, ‘sort of ‘by mistake’ studying geography, she was part of a trip to the Gold Coast to study tourism. “That trip made me realise that was what I wanted to do, so I applied for a future leaders scholarship at Lincoln University, and I got it. I studied for a Bachelor of Tourism Management, majoring in Marketing, and eventually found myself running my own marketing company here in Christchurch, C i Marketing.”
Liz missed singing after leaving school and going to Lincoln, as Lincoln University had no choir options. Working one Christmas in the Hornby Mall, she saw the Christchurch City Chorus perform and joined after an audition, “That was 20 years ago! Since then, I have competed with the chorus at five international competitions and have sung in Carnegie Hall in New York with the chorus.”
Now, the Christchurch City Chorus is heading to Kansas City to compete in the International Sweet Adeline Competition. Before the chorus leaves, there is an opportunity to enjoy a pre-departure show on Saturday, October 5, at 3pm and 7pm in St Margaret’s Charles Luney Auditorium. Tickets are available through Eventfinda; full details are on their website: ccchorus.co.nz.
The Chch City Chorus will be performing the two sets they are taking to Kansas City, representing New Zealand on the international stage, so these audiences will be the very first to see what they have been working so hard on for the past 18 months, as Liz says, “I am looking forward to being back on stage internationally after a five-year gap due to the complications with Covid. We have a really dynamic package to showcase, and I can’t wait to share our love for our art form with all who will be watching.”
