If all the world is a stage, St Margaret’s College Old Girl Georgia Lassen (Head Girl 2021) is in the centre. Dividing her time between studying a double degree - Bachelor of Law and Arts at UC; teaching speech and drama at SMC; and tutoring in the boarding house in the evenings, Georgia is still very much a part of SMC and is embracing the 2024 College theme – taking the floor at the Globe Theatre in London.
Referred by Head of Co-Curricular Arts Anna Richardson and SMC drama teacher Megan Herd, Georgia has won a place to be one of just 11 New Zealand teachers travelling to London in July with the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SCGNZ) Teachers Go Global.
The two week course at Shakespeare’s Globe is a professional developement opportunity for drama and English teachers. As a speech and drama teacher at SMC, as well as a Middle School drama tutor and theatresports workshop teacher, Georgia is looking forward to honing her method of teaching to help the Bard appeal to a younger audience.
The course will run in parallel with the SGCNZ’s Young Shakespeare Company 2024 study and performance trip – in 2021 Georgia was selected for NSSP (National Shakespeare Schools Production) a one-week intensive course from which 20 students are chosen to attend further training at the globe but due to other commitments she was unable to attend.
A highlight of the forthcoming trip for Georgia will be a Midnight Matinee to an invited public showcase performance of scenes on the Globe Stage by the participating students and teachers. But first there will be an opportunity for Georgia to catch up with friends with a short visit to France and Italy on the way, representing some downtime for a very busy student, teacher, tutor and bardalator.
