Claire is Head of News for Newstalk ZB in the South Island. In addition to leading daily news coverage and contributing to the NZ Herald and Herald Now, Claire is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of journalists through her teaching at the New Zealand Broadcasting School.
Claire’s journey began at St Margaret’s, where her early passion for storytelling was sparked. As a student, she attended court trials and wrote practice news stories, all while navigating personal challenges that demanded great resilience. Her determination carried her through a career that has taken her from Christchurch to Auckland, to Australia and back, covering major events such as the Canterbury earthquakes and earning recognition on both sides of the Tasman.
Presenting Claire with her award at the College's annual Arts Assembly, SMCOGA Committee member Charlotte Giles said: “Claire is not only a leader in New Zealand media but also a dedicated teacher and mentor, helping aspiring journalists find their voice. She exemplifies the very best of the St Margaret’s community and the spirit of the Arts Award.”
The SMCOGA Arts and Sports Awards recognise alumnae who have gone on to achieve remarkable things in their chosen fields while serving their communities. Presented on campus at the College's annual Arts and Sports Awards, the awards inspire current students to live with purpose and commit to excellence.
The SMCOGA Sports Award will be announced at the Annual Sports Awards on Wednesday 15 October.
