Sports News 21 March

SMC has been awarded Outstanding Female Engagement Initiative by the 2024 Community Cricket Awards! With more than 100 girls participating in cricket across our College, a girl's cricket journey at SMC can begin from Year 1 and continue well into adulthood, with our students supported by a number of White Fern and Canterbury Old Girls.

In addition to this national recognition, deservedly presented to cricket convenor and champion Amanda Hardy at an award ceremony attended by her and Executive Principal Diana Patchett, some recent highlights include:

The selection of Sophie Gibb and Lexie Boon, Year 10,  into a South Island U15 Invitational Cricket team traveling to Dubai to participate in the R66t Dubai Cup, with Amanda Hardy appointed the team's manager.

An annual fixture at The Willows against Otago Girls' School where we retained the Amy Satterthwaite-Suzie Bates Trophy, alumnae of our respective schools.

The annual capping of our 1st XI players – most recently Lily Young, Ciara Hartland and Maya Young.

Well done to all our staff and our girls for their support for the game.

Cycling

Emma Crawford attended the NZ Cycling Track National Champs this month in Cambridge. Emma didn’t have the best leadup to the event after suffering a crash off her bike, “Not a great lead up to Nationals after crashing and hurting my shoulder keeping me off the bike for 2 weeks. But I have learnt a lot and I'm really happy with the results”.

Emma won 3 National Titles in her age category in the Elimination, Scratch and Team Sprint events as well as a silver and a bronze medal.  Emma’s resilience and attitude to get back up and keep going is something to be really proud of and is a great example to share with other SMC students. Awesome work Emma.

The girls played exceptionally well and came away with outstanding results. The SMC A Cup team (Aliyah Daly, Lucy Young, Sophia Amyes) placed 1st, and the SMC B Cup team (Maddi Brown, Margo Dalling, Nevaeh Shand) placed 3rd. Some very high quality tennis was displayed over the course of the 2 days, while great sportsmanship and support was constantly shown.

The Senior A and Senior Blue teams both won Bronze in their divisions.
