Celebrations!
Congratulations to Year 4 SMC student Stella Lee, who recently competed in the Evolution Dance Competition National Finals which was held on the Gold Coast, Australia. It was her first overseas competition and she achieved outstanding results! In all four of her dances she received first place, ka pai!
Lyrical Solo 1st place
Jazz Solo 1st place
Music Theatre 1st place
Acro 1st place
Stella has also made it into the Top 3 performers for the Petite Evo Apprentice, and was invited to the Grand Final and placed 3rd for the Evo Apprentice Grand Champion. We are so proud of your incredible effort Stella, and can’t wait to see more of your talent on the SMC stage and beyond!
More dancing success! Congratulations to Indie Symonds, Allie Boon, Claudia Lassen, Siena McGillivray, Nova Gainsford, Hollie Cudd, Alex Ellwood, Lucy Lewis, who competed at the Evolution Dance Competition in the Gold Coast during the school holidays.
Four of the girls dance for Visionary and four dance for Silhouette. The girls all had to qualify at the regional event held in Christchurch last year to be able to compete in this competition. They all spent 10 days on the Gold Coast competing against the best dancers in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. All the girls performed amazingly in both solo events as well as teams. What wonderful ambassadors you are for SMC, keep lighting up that stage with your incredible talents.
Arts Co-curricular Sign Ups
Thank you to all the students who came along to the signup day at the start of the term. We had very enthusiastic responses to our groups on offer. We realise that sign-up day can be a bit overwhelming to some, so if you missed out on signing up but still want to join in a group are you welcome to complete this online form.
Visual Arts adventure!
On Friday the 2nd of February, the Year 11 Paint/Print and Y11 Photography/Design classes embarked on a hikoi of our local surroundings. Our first units of work in both subjects require students to understand their turangawaewae as well as the cultural narrative surrounding where they are standing, here at school. In Ĺtautahi, we are so lucky to have such rich visual information at our fingertips so this field trip enabled the girls to start to gather information for their first artworks.
We headed down Hagley Park towards the botanic gardens where we generated some photographs and made frottages of interesting plaques and textures. We carried on to the Worcester St bridge to sit on the banks of the Avon and picture life on Puari Pa before European colonisation. We carried on to Cathedral Square and then Victoria Square.
At each site, we stopped to complete a Zine that contained information and questions about the cultural significance of these locations. The rain arrived so we had to march quickly back to school but the girls all kept smiling through their rainjacket hoods.
We were impressed with the girls' engagement in content that is often glanced over and they were excellent ambassadors for EOTC at SMC.
Ka pai te mahi Y11 Visual Artists!
