Careers:Shadowtech

Jolin Ye, Year 9, attended ShadowTech at Verizon Connect.

On August 8th, I visited Verizon Connect, a local tech company. We were warmly welcomed and taken on a tour around the company. My favourite place was, without a doubt, the recreational space. I could tell how much the company cared about the well-being of their employees. It had everything you would expect a home to have: a TV, a kitchen, a toaster, and even barista machines. It was a place where the team could connect, whether through a game of table tennis or a board game if that’s more of what they prefer.

After the tour, we got led into a room with a challenge awaiting us, which was my favourite part of the day. Our job was to improve and develop a driving game, designing a safe route for the driver to deliver a package to the school. It was challenging, but seeing other people attempt your game definitely brought out lots of room for improvement and heaps of laughs.

I now know that programming is not my strong point, and if I were to pursue a career in tech, I would opt for something creative and technical. The wide range of information they offered and covered was amazing. I learned so much from the friendly staff and have taken so much away. One of the many things that stood out to me was when they talked about the various tech jobs in their company and how many tech jobs there are in the industry. From being a software engineer to a product manager and everything in between, there was definitely something for everyone.
