Sports News Term 3, Week 2 2026

Wow, what an eventful holiday break our sporting girls had, with some incredible individual achievements and outstanding team performances.

From running on the track, swimming in the pool, competing on the turf and the court, to reaching top speeds on their bikes, our girls were doing it all. 

As we look ahead to all that is happening in Term 3, we will not only be wrapping up our winter codes with a number of our top SMC players off to South Island or National Championships, but also by the end of Term 3 we will be signing up and having the majority of our summer sports trials.  So once again we have a busy and exciting sports term ahead.

CYCLING

Emma Crawford continued her outstanding form over the holidays, representing St Margaret’s College at the South Island Secondary Schools Cycling Championships in the Under 17 category. Emma dominated the competition, winning both the individual time trial, where she was also the fastest female rider overall, and the road race. 

NETBALL

Over the holidays we had our Year 9 and 10 netball teams competing in the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Netball Championships, held at Nga Puna Wai.  This four-day event sees junior teams from across the South Island come together to compete in the top competition.  Both teams performed exceptionally well over the course of the tournament, showing continued improvement, great teamwork and a whole lot of determination and grit.  The teams both progressed to the top 16 after pool play.  The Year 10 team went on to have a challenging next section but handled the pressure well and narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot, but managed to claim a very hard-earned 5th place.  An exceptional effort given there were a few bumps along the way. The Year 9 team dominated their section and made it to the semi-final, where they fought hard for every goal but just fell a little short.  This is a team that never gives up, so when they pulled themselves back up and produced a dominating effort to come away 3rd.  It was a massive effort from both teams, their coaches and managers, and of course the supporters.  Well done and thank you to everyone involved for a great week of netball.
