With Term 2 rapidly flying by, it has been wonderful to see our sports teams across all codes continuing to develop and strengthen as combinations settle and players gain more opportunities to train and compete together.
Like many schools, we have experienced periods where illness has impacted player availability, resulting in some teams being short on numbers. We are incredibly grateful to the students who have stepped up to fill gaps and help ensure teams could still take the field or court. Your flexibility and willingness to support others are greatly appreciated.
With the Senior Formal and the upcoming school holidays approaching, we kindly ask all families to check their daughters' availability for any scheduled fixtures during the holiday period. Having accurate availability information is essential in helping us ensure that all teams have sufficient numbers and that fixtures can proceed as planned.
Thank you for your ongoing support of school sport and the commitment you make to helping our students enjoy positive sporting experiences throughout the season.
CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday, a group of seven Year 5–8 girls represented St Margaret's College at the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country Championships held at Nga Puna Wai. Despite the exceptionally cold conditions, our runners embraced the challenge and produced some outstanding performances. Congratulations to Isla Foley, who claimed 1st place in the Year 7 Girls' race, and Charlotte Robertson, who finished 2nd in the Year 8 Girls' race. Well done to everyone involved on a fantastic day of racing and representing SMC so proudly.
EQUESTRIAN
On Sunday 24 May, McLeans Island was bustling with activity as riders gathered for the Canterbury Secondary Schools One Day Event. It is always an early start for an equestrian competition, but arriving in the dark and cold at this time of year makes it feel even earlier.
This year, St Margaret's College was proudly represented by two full teams and one individual rider at the School Sport Canterbury event. It was fantastic to see all of our riders competing with determination, sportsmanship, and immense pride in their school.
The day began with some outstanding dressage performances, with both riders and horses producing excellent tests. As the competition moved into the cross-country and show jumping phases, our teams continued to achieve strong results and showcase their hard work and preparation.
As everyone gathered for the mounted prizegiving, there was plenty of excitement and anticipation while awaiting the final results. The celebrations began when the SMC Green Team was awarded 1st Place in Turnout, a wonderful and well-deserved achievement. The success continued with the SMC Red Team placing 3rd Overall, an outstanding result against strong competition from across the region.
Congratulations to all of our riders on their achievements, and thank you to the dedicated families whose support and commitment make these opportunities possible.
The riders will now enjoy a short break from school equestrian events before turning their attention to the South Island Secondary Schools Equestrian Cup, which will be held during Tournament Week in Term 3. We wish them all the very best in their preparations.
