Athletics
What a fantastic day it was at Ngā Puna Wai on Tuesday, 11 November, for the Year 5–8 Independent Schools Zones Competition. Our Year 5 and 6 girls represented SMC with pride, determination, and great sportsmanship throughout the day.
The morning brought cool, windy conditions that made things tough for our distance runners, but many still managed to achieve impressive placings. As the weather warmed up, so did our results—our girls performed brilliantly across the field events and sprints.
By the afternoon, the sun was shining, spirits were high, and the success continued, with both our Year 5 and Year 6 relay teams qualifying for the Canterbury Competition on Wednesday, 26 November. Congratulations to all our competitors for their outstanding effort and teamwork!
A huge thank you to Zion Armstrong, who came along last Friday and on the day, to help the girls with their relay techniques.

Korfball
Our Junior A Korfball team were in action at the Mixx South Island Secondary Schools Junior Tournament at Ngā Puna Wai during the first weekend of November. The team is made up of six SMC girls along with a group of boys from CBHS.
The tournament began with three impressive wins on Saturday, including a tightly fought battle against CGHS — a team that had narrowly beaten them just a week earlier.
On Sunday, the team headed into their quarterfinal full of confidence. Their determination and teamwork shone through once again, earning them a well-deserved win and a place in the semifinals. Rising to the challenge, they advanced to face the tournament favourites, Cashmere, in the final.
After a fast start from Cashmere, our team had to dig deep to catch up — and they did! What followed was a thrilling, back-and-forth match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. When the final whistle blew, the team finished just a couple of goals short, but they had played their hearts out and given Cashmere their toughest game of the tournament.
A massive thank you to Tayla and Charlie for their expert coaching and support over the weekend.
Korfball takes a short break this week for Canterbury Anniversary Day, but will be back next Friday for the final round of games for the year.
Touch
Congratulations to the following players who have been named in Canterbury Touch representative teams:
U12 Black - Isla Hughes
U14 Red - Isobella Blakely
U14 Black - Eve Burnside, Alexis Robertson
The teams will be playing in Christchurch on 20–21 December at the Te Waipounamu Touch Tournament.
Best of luck to our girls — we’re so proud of you!
Volleyball
Last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, our 9A and 9B teams competed in the Canterbury Junior Volleyball Championships. This tournament is open to all Year 9 and 10 volleyballers, but with our Year 10s away at camp, our Year 9 girls stepped up to the challenge and did an outstanding job!
It was three great days of volleyball, with the girls facing some very strong competition in a very loud Pioneer Stadium. This event gave our developing players the chance to experience tournament play and get plenty of game time, which always leads to rapid improvement, and that’s exactly what we saw.
Both teams recorded their first wins against older teams, which brought plenty of excitement to the stadium. The feedback from players, coaches, and supporters was overwhelmingly positive. Everyone noticed how much the girls had improved from their first game and how much fun they had along the way.
A massive thank you to coaches Seb and Tom for all their work with these teams. The 9A team will continue on to one more tournament in two weeks’ time, and we wish them the best of luck!
Thank you also to all the parents and supporters who came along — it was fantastic to have such a big, enthusiastic crew on the sideline.
Looking Ahead:
Looking ahead, next week, our Junior A team heads to Invercargill to compete in the South Island Junior Tournament. They wrapped up their Monday night competition this week, finishing second in Division 1 and earning themselves a valuable Division 1 Wild Card spot for Invercargill.
Good luck, girls — we can’t wait to see how you go!
