For nearly a century, the Janet Storry Tennis Tournament has been a proud fixture in Christchurch school sport. A tradition founded not only on competition, but on character, service, and lifelong connection.
Janet Storry holds a unique place in the history of St Margaret's College. She was a first-day pupil Number 57) when the College opened in 1910, at its original Armagh Street site.
During her four years at the College, Janet distinguished herself as a student of exceptional ability and leadership. Serving as a school prefect, hockey captain, recipient of the School Honour Medal, and co-winner of the Holmes Challenge Cup. Her peers, including Dame Ngaio Marsh, later remembered her as a woman of great character and capability.
Janet's commitment to St Margaret's College did not end at graduation. She became a Life Member of the Old Girls' Association and, in 1931, the first Old Girl elected President, helping to shape the Association in its formative years. Her generosity also lived on through enduring contributions including the Storry Essay Cup for Creative Writing and the Janet Storry Bursary, established in 1935.
It was within this spirit of service and connection that Janet donated the tennis shield which now bears her name. Creating a tournament that continues to unite generations of players from St Margaret's College, Rangi Ruru, St Andrew's College and Christ's College.
As the Janet Storry Tennis Tournament approaches its 100th year, set for 2030, it stands as a fitting tribute to a woman whose legacy extends far beyond the court. One grounded in leadership, generosity, and an enduring love for her school.
